Blue Lang

I met Ned in 1992 when What anne Likes... was looking for a new drummer. I listened to the tape, and called Ned to tell him no WAY would I EVER play in a freaky-ass pop band. I'm WAAAAY too cool for that nonsense. At the time, I was in a 50's country band called the Lonesome Strangers. Playing with LS often involved going on stage at 1 or 2 in the morning at the Hardback (R.I.P) with a bandmate or two usually being too drunk to see. It was, in its own little way, quite a bit of fun. As part of being a full fledged "scene" band, we all made fun of Gainesville's many pop and funk (remember early 90's funk wannabes?) bands. About a year later I was rocking with a pre- Planet Ten ensemble called the 10,000 sins of Buddhism. After the (ahem) loss of our bassist, my MORTAL ENEMY (Ned) was again at my musical doorstep. So we rocked. Planet Ten lasted for about two years, during which time I was forced to reconsider many of my opinions on pop music, tempo (ugh), and odd time signatures. Near the end of Planet Ten, we were joined at a Civic Media Centera show by a freak named David Hornbuckle. As soon as we heard the chorus to Valentine's Day we knew had to rock with him. We played a couple of shows under different band names, including Satanbuckle and Hornbuckle, but finally settled on The Semantics. For the record, I STILL like the 3 piece band better. The only really good pictures of me occur elsewhere on this site, so I haven't bothered to repost them here.

Update -- Blue Explains Why He Left PopCanon:

We are sad to report that Blue 'MC Boeing' has left PopCanon after completing recording of our CD to work at Disney World in the 'It's A Small World' band, playing nothing but Disney hits 16 hours a day. Our shame was so great that we could not bring ourselves to admit the truth for some time. Blue will be sorely missed, and we pray for his soul nightly. As he said himself moments after he quit: 'I really don't miss playing in PopCanon. I've said it before, and I'll keep saying it till I believe it, but I think the band is much better without me. As great as having someone who ignores the band and solos over everything all the time must have been, PopCanon is really about the lyrics and vocals. I think most of the time I probably just detracted from that by trying to over-compensate for not being born Art Blakey. Also, I think some of it had to do with just being a competitive person in a band with good musicians--if you got to play dumb shit, *I* wanted to be able to play dumb shit, too.'
